With the decline of school discipline went a similar decline in the public’s esteem for teachers. This made the profession less atractive and fewer people of the necessary standard were inclined to follow it. This has led to a situation in the UK where some young teachers have no professional ethics and so little inclination to actually teach that they spend their time at school discussing pupils, and their parents, via Facebook. Further, presumably, because teachers of even that appalling standard are in short supply, they don’t get sacked!
