I was now feeling even more apprehensive and not the least bit aroused by the prospect of being beaten by the Headmaster. The red light stayed on and on and my waiting seemed interminable. I just wanted to get it over with but Mr Cloak was applying the principle that delay and anticipation intensify apprehension. I was almost wetting myself when at last the red light extinguished and the green light glowed. The intercom buzzed and Miss Evans said I was to go in.

I got up and weak-kneed walked up to his door, timidly knocking on it. I felt like a martyr entering the lion’s den.

“Come in.”
