boys were subject to ceramonial thrashings and beaten with canes in quite a macho and almost marshal way basicly to toughen them up in order that they can serve as mambers of the British Empire and all that stands or stood for, but girls who were likewise playing up didn’t need to be treated that way, they were just seen as a naughty little girls who needed to have their bottoms smacked and thats was pretty much the attitude of most schools at the time.
