Regulations were set by the school, local authority or Board. They were hardly ever the same. Even two schools in 200 yards of each other may have differing rules on cp. The trouble was that the rules were often refered only to the use of the cane, with just suggestions about other punishments.

A lot of these regulations were stuck into the front of punishment books and often the school log book.

In 1958 at St Peters one of the regulations read

“The Head (that was me) may require a boy to take the cane on his bare buttocks, and an apppropiate number of strokes given. The deputy may only administer up to six strokres on the buttocks which should normally be covered. Deputies must gain approval of, and have the caning witnessed by a senior teacher, if the boy is required to take it bare”
