I have often heard it said that the slipper was a relatively mild punishment hardly worth to be classed as corporal punishment at all. I have always been rather mystified by this attitude because some of the slipperings that were dished out at my school were extremely painful. Whether the slipper hurt as much or more than the cane is debatable. I suppose a lot depends on who is administering the punishment. One can argue about whether deliberately inflicting pain on schoolchildren who misbehave is a good idea or not. Most people nowadays seem to be against it.
