Parents would have been proud that their sons had passed the entrance exam and would also have expected discipline to be extremely strict. The fact that boys were subjected to corporal punishment on a regular basis was perceived as a necessary part of their education.
I must confess that the regime that David describes seems very draconian and one can only imagine the despair felt by boys of slightly lower ability than their peers. In the 4th and 5th years their backsides must have really suffered but fairness was not on the agenda for the type on instituion which was attended.
