We hated it of course and I vividly recall the sinking feeling when I was half way though a test and I realised that I had not revised enough and had no chance of reaching the pass mark. I also remember the tension in the classroom when the results were announced. A favourite practice of some teachers was to call out the names of the boys who had failed in reverse order, starting with those who had failed narrowly and ending with those who were miles off the pass mark.
