The boys had to walk out to the front and line up so that they could be whacked in the same order. If your name was not called out early on you got very nervous because your options were narrowing down. Would it be zero whacks or would it be 10 or 12? Anyone who has watched the voting in the Eurovision Song Contest will know what I mean. What I can say is that it was very effective. Most of us worked hard and revised like crazy for the tests, especially if the teacher was known to whack hard.
