I had my first experience of 12 of the best at the beginning of the second term in the third year. There had been a heavy snowfall and two of us were fooling around with snow. We shoved it down another boy’s collar and were caught by a teacher whom I didn’t even know. He took us into his classroom and whacked us in front of his class. In the first three years, we typically got 3, 4 or 6. Occasionally we got a few more but 12 was exceptional. In the fourth and fifth years, it was much more common.
