At my school, a boys’ grammar school in Macclesfield, most teachers used the slipper. One or two used the cane and I can remember two who used the strap. One was Scottish and he used a typical Scottish tawse, though I didn’t know that at the time. The other was English and he used a thick single piece of leather about 24 inches long. Both strapped us on the seat of the trousers. It hurt slightly more than the slipper.

At primary school most teachers strapped the hands. However, one temporary relieving teacher applied the strap to the seat of the shorts to very great effect. It was a forewarning for secondary school where punishment was exclusively on the buttocks – almost always clothed – strictly M/m only. The big advantage of the strap over the cane was its portability. It could be carried everywhere and used to visit instant retribution.
