My husband and I got the strap in Grade 5 about 9 years old.
We just got it on the hands only. Both the right hand and then the left. 6 strokes on each hand.
Boy did it hurt!!!
There is no doubt that officially and in practice the school tawse in Scotland was almost exclusively applied to the hands. This does not mean there was no tawsing or strapping of buttocks in non-school situations, or in Northern England schools. Although there is little or no evidence that tawsing or strapping of the hands caused serious injury to the hands the buttocks would seem to be a more suitable and safer target.
