In my secondary school in southern England in the sixties the STRAP, also known as the TAWSE was used, it was always used on the hands, both hands held out in front of you one resting on the other facing the teacher,it stopped you pulling your hand back, the first time was in the second year 1 on each hand for hitting another boy on the head with a book, in my third year got 3 for smoking along with 3 other boys and 2 girls, both fourth year 14 year old who got 2, while we stood facing the back wall hand on head, in my fourth year got 6 for a classroom riot, the boys were strapped in front of the class, the girls were taken to the headmistress study.
Most of the schools in the area used the CANE, something my parents used at home.
