A caning is only effective as a punishment if it is inflicted to beyond the stage where it is bearable. It must be painful enough for the boy or girl to completely lose their self-composure during the thrashing, and surrender to the uncontrolled vocal reaction of cries or screams. On the other hand, punishment must not be continued to the point of serious or permanent injury. The buttocks should be bruised but are resilient and quickly recover in normal circumstances
If the boy or girl ‘took it well’ then it wasn’t hard enough.
