It seems from contributors to this thread that 5 strokes of the cane was not known to them as being one of the usual levels of punishment. Certainly I can never recall having come across reference to that number of strokes being given, though I suspect that it is not beyond the realms of possibility that someone, boy or girl, was sentenced to 4 but got one extra for not remaining bent over until all strokes had been delivered.
However… there are frequent references to 5 whacks with a paddle being administered to the bottoms of school children in schools in the USA; indeed references to 6 whacks (pops, or whatever you like to call them) are very hard to come by. Does anyone know why this should be?
