I had far more experience on the receiving end of the slipper – from teachers of both sexes. In general, it seemed that female teachers slippered a lot harder than male teachers did. It wasn’t that men went easier on girls either because the boys tended to agree. If I had being given the choice of “male or female teacher”, without knowing which particular teachers, I would have chosen to have the slipper off a male teacher. As I would have had no experience of being caned by either Ms Thomas or Mr Chenevix-Trench, I would have played the odds and chosen Mr Chenevix-Trench.
