Assembly always started with a hymn. This was followed by either a report (only stressing England was winning even if we were not…even Dunkirk had to be told as a victory). This was followed by reminders of certain rules or special events that were taking place. If there had been complaints about a boy or a group their names were read out and sent to my study. Boys would then sometimes be asked to take out their handkerchiefs. We have then sung a second hymn and I would always walk around the hall sending boys would have not got their gas masks, no hankerchiefs or dirty shoes to my office. Sometimes this was followed by A GAS MASK DRILL to make sure boys knew how to put them on, but more importantly, once they had to turn the box upside down. Those that had anything in it were sent out to my study. The assembly was then ended with prayers.
