This checking of homework was very important. As the boys often had different teachers it was important to keep up standards. It was also common for boys not to bother to do homework if the teacher that set it was not going to be in school to collect it the next day and had to be handed into to another teacher. Those found guilty were made in turn out the front to drop their trousers and pants (if worn) and bend over. I lifted, often with difficulty their shirts (which were very long) and administered two whacks of the slipper on the bottom. They were positioned so that the whol3 class could see the slipper making contact with the boys bottom. It may sound harsh but it always resulted in a great improvement in work of that class, at least for the next few days.
