The caning of girls was not permitted in the UK after about 1970
On 12 November 1976 Miss Janet Dines, Headmistress of Northwich Girls’ Grammar School in Cheshire, appeared at Northwich Magistrates Court to face a private prosecution for assault after caning a fifteen-year old girl, Lynne Marie Simmonds. The case was dismissed at the request of the prosecuting counsel. (The case was, however, subsequently considered by the European Commission, and the UK Government made an ex-gratia payment in compensation.)
