On that basis, it becomes clear that one cannot punish a sensitive 11-year-old with the same instrument that one would use to punish an 18-year-old ‘tough nut’ and thus some old-time Headteachers stocked a variety of canes.
In practice, however, it was in most schools relatively rare for pupils under 12 or over 15 to be caned – and thus many schools employed only one cane and varied the degree of punishment by varying the number of strokes applied.
