Some thirty years later than David Niven experienced school, I – and many others – were successfully brought up under similar conditions. The core of that system of reward (and yes – there was reward) and punishment, corporal and otherwise, in many schools at the time was a common trust and direction between parents and teachers. The concept of < in loco parentis > had real meaning. Of course, it was not a system without some errors and abuses: but was the overall outcome of the education it engendered better or worse than children experience today? If it is felt that, on balance, it was better, how can it be successfully restored? Now there are a few issues.
