But having said all that, I’m not 100% certain that we’re really talking about a genuine problem here. I’ve had similar feelings on other occasions during my teaching career as well. On a school camp during the early 1990s, I found myself compelled to enter a shower area occupied by girls (before anybody says anything – because I got well and truly savaged by people on another forum when I mentioned this incident recently – by people who believe such things must obviously be completely illegal – while it is considered very desirable that teachers should avoid entering areas occupied by children of the opposite sex in a state of undress, there’s no absolute prohibition on it anywhere in Australia (in independent schools, it is covered under in loco parentis and state schools have covered it under regulations, and there are a few particular situations – where it is not only permitted, but actually required.)
