I was caned 12 times over a period of 6 years, aged 9 to 15 (1966 through 1971):
* Eating a toffee in class (3 strokes)
* Not paying attention in class (2)
* Untidy uniform (3)
* Not standing up for an adult on a public bus (3)
* Forgetting to bring my PE gear (4)
* Fighting in the grounds (5)
* Engaging in fruit throwing in the classroom (5)
* Walking over newly sown grass on the front lawn (3)
* Writing a message on the gym changing room wall (6)
* Not getting a haircut when I was told to (4)
* Playing the wag (“unauthorised non-participation”) on two occasions (6 each time)
All were on the bottom except the 2 for not paying attention which were on the hand.
I considered the caning for fighting unfair as I didn’t start it, I was only defending myself, otherwise they were all deserved.
