Some of the teachers I had used the cane for offences that were quite trivial, a couple of of my friends got it for running in the corridor for example. Actually for me the cane was less painful than the regular visit to the school dental nurse who seemed to consider her task to drill a tooth or two regardless of whether it was needed and in those days they didn’t use pain killing injections, at least not for children.
