At our school you had to go up some stairs to the heads office,his secretarys office was opposite on a narrow passage. The proceedure was to knock and tell the secretary that you had been sent up for punishment and for what reason, she then had you wait as she informed the head. You were then shown into his office and by that time the cane was on his desk and a chair was positioned in the corner, I well remember the sight of that cane the trembling and fear began instantly.
The order to place your hands flat on the seat of the chair was given, then as you bent like this the number of strokes was announced and administered.
The worse bit was having to return to the secretarys office to tell her how many strokes you had been given so that she could enter it into the punishment book, the awful pain in your bottom cheeks made talking almost impossible.
