In the early 1980’s a letter from a woman in Norfolk advocating the use of corporal punishment in schools appeared in the Radio Times. The writer claimed that as pupils in the fifth form, she and a small group of friends had been caught imbibing alcohol on school premises and “we each received two strokes of the cane on our seats. In the case of us girls it was administered over our pants and tights.

She concluded by saying that although it was not a terrible beating, it did hurt and it was very embarrassing, but it taught her respect for authority.
