What about slippering or caning the whole class when no-one has done anything wrong? There’s a scene in a film called “The Long Day Closes” (about growing up in Liverpool in the 40s) in which a new teacher gives a whole class one stroke of the cane on the hand “just to show them whose boss”. And I have heard stories of old fashioned public schools where everyone gets the cane on the first or last day of term. (I met a fellow at college who claimed that his mother had smacked him with a slipper once a month for all the naughty things he’d done that month which she didn’t know about!) I wonder what effect this kind of thing has?
