Does it matter? Some think not. I happen to think this is the thin edge of the wedge before you get a fully-fledged sadist ( and we know where were some, even in the best-organised education systems).
I have often said both here and on the TWP blog I would have happily allowed my children to be taught by the TWP ladies, and I would trust them with the paddle. That is in the context of a society where this is normal practice, socially supported, and with people who openly admit they act with moderation. On the other hand, I would have moved heaven and earth to get a daughter away from a teacher like JJ.
