When I haved used corporal punishment, at least since the 1980s (before that, things were different, and I don’t think we had it right, and I don’t think I got it right as much as I could have in retrospect) it’s because other things have failed, and of the options we have left to us, we believe it is the best, most human, and, yes, most moral option. If the choice is using the cane or giving up a child by expelling him, if the choice is using the cane or giving him a detention knowing that because of his particular personality, a detention is actually a punishment he will regard as more severe and more distressing than the cane, and if I believe that using the cane once now, reduces the chance of needing to take more severe methods in the future, or will actually help to solve a problem within days.
