Here was Lisa Haynes and Cindy Doty “carrying on a conversation and passing notes”. Although they knew that Mrs Preston paddled students quite often, these two young ladies (age 14 or 15 ?? – many of us are not in USA ) were ignoring their disobedience, and had forgotten the threat of the paddle. Even though Mrs Preston very directly told Lisa to shut up, Lisa was apparently soon chatting away again, in direct defiance of Mrs Preston.
Well a few minutes later, Mrs Preston did paddle her, and a very reasonable 2 swats, that do not appear in any way excessive: a good example of “reasonable chastisement”. You don’t say if Lisa had any trouble sitting down. Can you remember if she did?
