I went to a grammar school in the Midlands from 1958-1965 and there was definitely a change in attitudes to cp during that time. When I started, the head and deputy walked around with canes and used them frequently. Prefects would slipper boys for the most trivial of offences – socks too light a shade of grey, talking while waiting in line, not wearing a cap, tie too loose – and masters would slipper boys in front of the class for any slight breach of classroom discipline. Actually masters would use all kinds of implements to beat boys’ bottoms, especially the science masters with all that equipment available – meter rulers, rubber tubing. And as for PE – we wore those thin gym shorts and the PE master walked around all the time with a plimsoll and used it on any boy that he thought wasn’t trying hard enough.
