Student Variables:
* the emotional state of the student at the time of the punishment.
* whether or not the child has been the victim of abuse/neglect.
* mitigating factors that may influence a student’s behavior such as attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, mental retardation, learning disabilities, or emotional disturbance.
*differences in the clotting factors of a student’s blood may predispose him/her to bruising.
* whether or not the student moves during the punishment in an effort to shield him/herself, thus, increasing the likelihood of injury.
* The reaction of the student to corporal punishment cannot be
predicted nor can the events that such punishment may put into motion. Some students may be prompted to attempt and/or succeed at attempting suicide while other students may run away, commit acts of vandalism or express their anger in even more violent and tragic ways.
