Cruelty to boys alleged

Boys were made to strip naked and were beaten at a private boarding school, the prosecution alleged at Hampshire Assizes at Winchester yesterday, when the headmaster appeared on twelve charges involving the boys.

He was William Michael Byrd, aged 38, of Cholderton College, near Sailsbury. He pleaded Not Guilty to all 12 charges. Five alleged assaults on boys occasioning them bodily harm, and the others alleged he treated boys in his care and control with cruelty. The boys were between 11 and 16 at the time.

The Court was told that there were 60 boys at the school. More than half the parents were serving overseas.
