Corporal punishment survey

Hi, I don’t know if this forum can help, but I’m trying to put together some realistic data regarding the use of corporal punishment in schools.

Reading this and other internet sources of information it is clearly very hard to distinguish between genuine accounts of CP, peoples fantasies, and role play.

School punishment books are difficult to find, or access. When they are available they only show the information that the establishments wished to disclose. They also only reflect official punishments, generally administered by the Head, consequentially they are not very representative of the general use of CP within schools.

If I study references in the media, the reports are generally only written when the incident was questionably outside the law. In England where I live, and indeed went to school, corporal punishment was legally practiced up until 1986. Therefore there would be no reason for the media to cover anything except the unusual.

Many of us however have witnessed (often first hand) the use of corporal punishment at school. If you have (as indeed have I) I’d be very grateful if you’d reply to this post giving as much accurate information as you feel comfortable with. However to keep this thread out of the realm of fantasy, I’d ask that you only post facts, and leave the creative writing and long discussions to other forums.

The information I’d love you to provide is the following:

About You:
Gender:
Approximate age when punished:
Approximate year of punishment:
Crime committed or alleged:

About the punishment
Administered by Head, or Staff member:
Gender of staff member:
Location punished (Classroom, Office, Hallway etc):
Type of punishment (Cane,Slipper,Paddle etc):
Number of strokes:
Applied to (Hand, Bottom, Legs etc):
Position adopted (Standing, Bending over Chair, Desk etc):
State of dress (Over Trousers/Skirt, panties, bare etc):
Privacy (In private, In front of Class, With another teacher etc):

About the school
Name of School:
Town:
Country:

Effectiveness
Were you ever punished again for the same offence?:
Do you consider the punishment effective?:

Any other relevant info:

Many thanks for your participation. I will reply to this post myself with the details of the CP I received.

Note: I see no reason why schools should not be named as they were operating completely within the law.

A large number of contributors have reported above. What we need now is someone of great intelligence, perseverance and good looks to attempt a statistical analysis and summary of the data. I would, for example, be interested in the reported ages at which SCP was received.

Is there anybody who lurks here willing to under take the task for the good of humanity and my entertainment?

<div style=”width:100%;background-image:url(“/realm/A_L_123/A_L_trg.gif”);”>Hello KK,

Humanity can go hang, but your entertainment, now there is a worthy cause!

Seriously, are you serious? And if so exactly what are you interested in and how filtered?

For those respondents, the majority I think, who have copy/pasted the query layout provided by Robin back in March 2010 and replied thereon it should not be too difficult to provide a table of numbers subjected to SCP at successive ages from the lowest to the highest ages found. But what value would it have? Amongst other factors it would be ignoring gender and severity of punishment. And then there’s the question of authenticity. Should every claim be accepted at face value or should the compiler apply some sort of criteria designed to eliminate the more blatant fakes?

I don’t exactly lurk here and these days my perseverance is getting a little frayed. However my intelligence and good looks are of course of the highest order so I more or less fit your profile of an ideal statistical analyst. Clarify and ye may receive – or not, as the case may be!</div>

Unless they already know your email address from a source outwith Network54 or possess psychic powers I do not think that anyone can communicate with you by email as a result of seeing your above contribution.

It was I think quite unusual for a male pupil to be caned over underpants in a UK secondary school in 1960. Especially so when one such caning was administered by a female teacher and the other in front of the entire school. To have also managed to get spanked over the knee of a female teacher in the same mode aged 15 must be fairly unique, especially for an offence (smoking) for which the cane was commonly employed.

Was on the underpants the general rule for the application of SCP at your secondary school please?</div>

Hello hcj,

The French class belting was the only occasion that I saw someone with injuries to their wrists after getting the belt. It’s difficult for me to be accurate about length, but the cuts from the tails on both wrists were probably an inch or two beyond the crease where the wrists join the palms. They were not bleeding profusely, so I guess the best description would be that the injuries were grazes. This was the first and only time that I saw Mr R use the belt and he was angry when he administered the punishment, so perhaps this is why he was less accurate than most other teachers.

I have received literally thousands of strokes of the belt as an adult and on only one occasion have the tails landed on my wrist. This left a very obvious imprint of each tail so I had to be very careful for the next few days to avoid the mark being seen!

Hello KK

In mid 2015 I started such an exercise, but was frustrated by various things.
Firstly, what to do with the frauds – I think I just excluded the blatant ones.
Secondly, how to classify the offences – the variety was amazing.
Thirdly, how to cope with missing and fuzzy information.
Despite these, I think it is/was a useful exercise.

The below is up to June 2015 (19 pages, 31 different people and 108 punishments). Currently there are 32 pages but the format of entries has deteriorated. I have just created a quick pivot table. Would be happy to do other stats.

The fields in my spreadsheet correspond to the original questions:
Page ,Who ,Gender ,Age ,Year ,Crime ,Admin ,AdmG ,Locn ,Implement , Number ,Target ,Position ,Dress ,Privacy ,Group ,School ,Schooltype ,Where ,Country ,Again ,Effective

Age #punishments
5…. 3
6…. 2
7…. 9
8…. 12
9…. 12
10… 12
11… 8
12… 11
13… 17
14… 10
15… 3
16… 7
5-15 2
Total 108
Note: 36 punishments were on females of which 7 were under 11, 29 were 11 and over
72 were on males of which 43 were under 11, 27 were 11 and over plus 2 unhelpfully said 5-15

One more table – implement used:
Implement Count
Cane 37
Dustbrush 2
Hand 22
Heavy ruler 2
n/a 1
Paddle 4
Paddle with holes 2
Plimsoll 3
Ruler 5
Slipper 11
Strap 11
Switch 1
Tawse 5
Tawse (3 tailed) 1
Yardstick 1
Total 108

I am happy to attach my csv file if someone would like but someone would have to tell me how to attach. I could add it as a post but it would be messy.

Apologies re my previous post. I just looked at my spreadsheet and see it only covered pages 10-19 of the thread. I didn’t even get back to do pages 1-9 before I ran out of energy/time.

The implement=”n/a” puzzled me. I see it was Miki from Japan who was made to stand for 2 hours for talking in class.

Even in its incomplete form I think this is interesting and thank you for taking the trouble to do it. I wonder if the ‘slipper’ and ‘plimsoll’ may need to be treated with caution since in my school the two terms meant the same thing. Rarely (I believe) was an actual carpet slipper as worn – and probably used for punishment in homes – actually used in school. I am not volunteering to take up your challenge, but well done.

Tom

Does anyone believe Steve Evans is genuine? I want him to be, but always have reservations when someone posts something interesting, then doesn’t follow it up with more explanation when requested.

If he is to be believed, it would suggest that spanking on just underpants was the norm in his school(s). But obviously the one that lights our fires is the OTK spanking by a lady teacher at age 15. This is a very unusual scenario, and the fact that Steve has posted a paucity of detail, leaves its authenticity open to doubt. So, please Steve, come back with much more detail of this fascinating titbit. We are all agog!
