Sending people out of class was a fairly rare event at my school. Most masters prefered to dispense discipline themselves in the classroom. Usually this involved inviting the boy causing a problem out to the front of the class where he had to bend over and take a few hard whacks on the seat of his trousers from the master’s very large, heavy plimsoll. This had the benefit of teaching the young offender a much-needed lesson as well as deterring the rest of us from similar behaviour.

But I do remember one master, a weak teacher, totally ineffective at maintaining classroom discipline who, once an unruly class had almost drive him to tears, would pick on one boy and make him stand outside the classroom door. On one occsion the headmaster found the kid there, poked his head into the classroom to ask why this miserable boy had been sent out of class, and on hearing the reason took the boy back to his study for a good, sound caning.
